The challenge faced by the design team was how to integrate personal and outdoor spaces without compromising the residents’ need for privacy. Special consideration was given to the illumination of the building, defining its form according to the needs of the structure and its residents. The façade features vertical wooden blinds which filter natural light, creating ever-changing facets, depending on the season, the time and their use. The technical lighting inside the building follows a similar principle.
This south-east facing residence is also equipped with an underground garage and facilities include; a gym, spa, steam room and BBQ area. These facilities occupy an extra floor which is enriched with low level plants. Finally, the ruggedness of the building is achieved via the use of modest materials (eco-kourasanit, visible concrete, cement mortar and wood). This materiality ties in with the low-maintenance, waterless Mediterranean garden of the surrounding space. A31 chose to use plants which grow in the local area, Ymittos mountain, in order to integrate the project with the area and the local landscape.
