During the mid ‘80s, Blue Bay Hotel Ios was built on a 3.900m2 site on Yialos, Ios island. The building was not renovated or reconstructed for more than twenty years. In 2010, the complete renovation of its premises was seen as a necessity, in order to improve the facilities and upgrade the services offered. A31 was assigned with the task to transform a 2* hotel to a contemporary 4* boutique hotel

A31 was assigned with the task to transform a 2* hotel to a contemporary 4* boutique hotel. In order to succeed, A31 redesigned the existing buildings’ outline and created new openings, doors and windows.

Designed in a reductionist manner, the project is defined by its sculptural surfaces. A31 also established flow and movement to the project by securing the organic integration of the water element in the surrounding space.

The rooms were conceived as individual spaces of island architecture, with special features and not as typical hotel rooms. Therefore, all of the rooms were redesigned with a new layout and access, in order to meet the 4-star classification requirements. Furthermore, additional common spaces were constructed, including an open bar, restaurant, wine cellar, swimming pool, outdoor revitalization spa and playground.
